Question for Reflection

  • What comes to mind when you think about the word temptation?

Temptation vs. Sin: Is sin and temptation the same thing?

  • Temptation:
    • The pull towards an act or desire; it’s the intention, contemplation, or enticement towards sin.
  • Sin:
    • The act of following-through and acting on the temptation

When Jesus was teaching the disciples He taught them when you pray…
“AND lead us not into temptation… Matthew 6:13

  • LEAD US…
    • What does it mean to be led? Who is the one leading?
    • It’s an activity of two, being led by the One in Hebrews 4
    • What is the benefit of having someone to lead us,
or to accompany with us?
    • Jesus understood what it meant to have someone accompany Him

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us…

What is Temptation?

  • The Greek for temptation “peirasmos” is better translated as trial, testing, or temptation.
  • When we are tested and put through trials:
    • How am I being tested today?
    • What kinds of trails am I facing?
    • What could it be like if I’ve gone through this well?
    • How can GOD use this?”
  • When we are tempted:
    • The NATURE of TEMPTATION:  the pull, desire and belief that “illegitimate ways can meet legitimate needs”
      • “How are you fulfilling or meeting your physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs?”
    • Consider what Jesus taught about our basic needs in Matthew 6:34

God’s NOT leading us into TEMPTATION, but is DELIVERING US

  • James 1:2-5
  • The HOPE isn’t in not being led into the trial/testing/temptation but to be led into deliverance

How does God deliver us?

  • It begins with being able to admit we all go through trial, testing, and temptation
  • 1ST Take the courage to NAME IT
    • What is your current struggle?
  • 2ND Identify what triggers it
    • When and where am I vulnerable to testing, trials, and temptations?
      • Understand my H.A.L.T.S.
  • 3rd What can I do about it MY plan to face it
    • What are my needs? What are the physical, psychological, social and spiritual bread that I am seeking?
      • Come to the LORD in prayer for my daily bread
      • Pray to be led through to deliverance
  • 4th Write a list: brainstorm ideas, ask for help, journal your ideas
    • What are legitimate, practical ways, I can meet those needs through God’s help and leading?
      • What can I do?
      • What do I have to trust the Lord with?
  • 5th Who can I lean on to support me in my plans and ideas?
    • Who can I ask for help, support, encouragement, and accountability: physically, psychologically, socially & spiritually?

When it comes to TRIALS, TESTING, & TEMPTATIONS it’s so easy to get into MIND TRAPS:

  • CATASTROPHIZING & OVERGENERALIZING

GOD calls us to see the other side of TEMPTATION & TRIALS: 1 Cor 10:13

  • Imagine what it means to be led through trials, testing, and temptations and to know God’s deliverance
  • How could it help us to understand, that we are ALL vulnerable and that anyone of us can be tempted, tested or put through a trial?
  • What if we apply our understanding of the nature of temptation and testing and we could find legitimate ways to meet legitimate needs!
  • Imagine the joy, freedom and deliverance we can find in Jesus!
